Bubble Camping

How rad would it be to spend the weekend in one of these crazy bubble tents? Designed by Pierre-Stephane Dumas, each bubble is large enough for a bed and two chairs. They also come in a partially opaque version for campers seeking a little more privacy. If that isn't enough bubble space, it looks like Pierre may have multi-room options available as well. Spectacular, right?

Fish

How fantastic are these giant fish sculptures on the beaches of Brazil? They were built as part of Rio +20 our of discarded bottles. The result is amazing. I would love to see them at person - and at night!

We're taking a trip

So we had a little bit of time and a little bit of money - so we've decided rather spontaneously to take a little bit of a trip to Montreal... next week. 

We had been juggling the idea of a summer vacation and when other plans didn't shake out, we didn't want to lose the opportunity to get away and D.'s creativity took us, well, will take us to Montreal. 

So we're looking for advice, what to do, where to go, how much poutine to eat? I'm already dreaming of biking by the canal, snacking on stinky cheeses and sitting outside for cool evenings at the summer jazz festival that serendipitously coincides with out visit. Give us your suggestions!!

Dark Days

It's a weekend morning tradition for D. and I to watch a documentary in bed, cup of coffee in hand via Netflix streaming, which despite cutting back on good films available online, still has a great selection of docs.

This weekend we finally watched Marc Singer's Dark Days which I had heard about a long time ago. Singer made this film over ten years ago while living in a community housed in an abandoned Amtrak tunnel not far from Penn Station in New York. 

The gritty 16mm black and white film paints a haunting portrait of what feels like an alternate universe. The long dolly shots at the beginning seem more fitting for a colony on the surface of the moon, or the bottom of the ocean. Totally fascinating.

This recent interview with Marc Singer gives even more context as he looks back on the film ten years later.

Better Beds

D and I have been ticking off a long list of home improvements since we moved into our house over four years ago. One that has been on that list for a while is a plushly dramatic upholstered replacement for our current wooden headboard. From the tutorials I've read and the videos I've watched it seems like a major undertaking, but after helping a friend get started on her own not too long ago, I think it's time to finally give it a go. 

We'll call this the research phase as we rule out anything too girly (curvy tops) or overly tufted and try to settle on a design that's both attractive and achievable.

Delicious Discovery

While in Charleston, we happily sampled the local bloody mary mix, which I have been craving ever since our return. Luckily for me, you can buy a bottle (or a case) online and the shipping will only set you back $5, much less than our plane tickets.

I came to the bloody mary party late, but strong. Now sipping on a concoction of tomato, horseradish, worcestershire, and my favorite addition, pickle juice, has become a Sunday afternoon tradition see exhibits, A, B and C. Although I usually stir up my own mix from scratch, with pre-made this good, it's hardly necessary.

I find this one to be heavy on the worcestershire and totally delicious, don't blame me if your Sunday's become far less productive.

Charleston

Our long weekend in the holy city was exactly what the doctor ordered, although coming back to reality, a near impossibility. Here are our vacation pics - I'm still drooling over that beach, those biscuits and such incredible architecture.
